Eat Plenty of Oily Fish for Your Health



If you are health conscious or the type of person who keeps an eye on your weight, then there is a good chance that you have met the above tips several times.

Yet what is it about fish making it the favorite of many experts in healthy eating and dieting?

Cultural comparisons

To some extent at least, the popularity of fish in terms of recommended eating has its origins in comparative studies among different populations around the world.

Perhaps the best known example is the Mediterranean diet and its association with the undeniable statistical evidence pointing to the fact that many populations around the region have much lower cases of cardiovascular disease (eg, heart attacks and stroke, etc.) that people in other parts of the world, especially in North Europe.

Decades ago, there was an attempt to attribute this to a simplistic thing or another that may have been eaten in and around the Mediterranean. Today, it is regarded as slightly naive and a much more comprehensive view is taken, looking at things such as the combination of various food products, exercise, reduced stress levels and even the fact that n 'there is usually a lot more sun and heat in the region and in Northern Europe.

However, the fish are generally consumed at a much higher level in and around the Mediterranean than in other parts of Europe and North America. Not only that, but the fish consumed is often a less popular type in the north, including things such as sardines and mackerel - as well as other examples of what is called "fatty fish.

It is not only the Mediterranean, but which offered cultural comparisons that seem to show a correlation between fish consumption and a reduction in the prevalence of certain diseases.

Japan is another often-cited example, due to the fact that, traditionally, this culture ate relatively little meat but large quantities of fish - although this is changing rapidly.

Once again, the Japanese rate of certain diseases sometimes called "Western", such as those mentioned above, are considerably lower than you can usually find in Northern Europe.

What is the effect?

Many types of fatty fish contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, fatty acids and antioxidants.

Much of the conventional medical science now agrees that certain fatty acids may have an important role to play in helping to keep the circulatory system in better condition and reduce the risk of certain types of cardiovascular disease.

Extensive claims were also made for fish oils reduce cancer properties, but perhaps slightly surprising, medical science has struggled to justify these claims clearly and objectively through objective experimentation.

However, few people argue that the consumption of fatty fish is simply the right thing for you so interesting in the US, pregnant women in particular are encouraged to reduce their consumption of what is sometimes called the fish "predatory" such as sharks and some types of tuna and mackerel.

This is largely to do with the concerns that large predators may have consumed other fish containing mercury and other pollutants.

In summary, it is probably fair to say that "the wonder panacea reputation as oily fish built a few years ago was diluted somewhat in the light of practical experience. For example, the Mediterranean diet is now considered much more a combination of things such as fish, nuts, fruits and vegetables, rather than just fish itself.

Even so, there is little doubt that the consumption of fatty fish should be an important part of any diet or weight loss program health conscious.
