What Do Dinosaurs, Weight Gain and Thumbtacks Have in Common?

What Do Dinosaurs, Weight Gain and Thumbtacks Have in Common?

Sorry, there is no punchline ... even though it may seem likely with a title such as above. Too often I read and hear about the latest beverage mix, short-term diet or program that provides meals in order to help women and men to lose weight. I also hear from those struggling through counting calories, weigh themselves before their peers and try to fit into a pair of skinny jeans. In America, it is estimated that more than one third of Americans are obese ... is overweight. Face it, people in Western cultures face a risk factor for overweight and the odds are against us.

So why is it that diets consume the market and the mass media, but the weight gain is on the rise? Based on the model of functional medicine and my experience, it is because we do not identify the root cause for weight gain. From a functional perspective weight gain is tack in the foot. You can take an anti-inflammatory all day but if the bug remains, it will be the long-term pain. Let me explain further.

Our physiology, biology and biochemical interactions are consistent with the way the body functioned 40,000 years ago. Yes, we have improved intelligence since we were cave men / women, but our genetic material has changed very little. In prehistoric times we fought for our food, run dinosaurs and ate when possible. After hunting and eating, the body would store food as fat understanding that it will need a fuel source in the coming days; uncertain of his next meal. The fuel is a matter of life or death for the body, so that it gives priority to using the reaction control / flight. The fight / flight response is an integrated survival mechanism, adaptation and compensation to protect themselves, often without asking us.

Today, the body made in the same way. When there is chronic stressors (external, internal or multiple), the body creates the same stress response: to store fat. Yes, we are not running from dinosaurs, but the body does not make this distinction. Whatever stress point (food sensitivities, sleep disorders, toxic overload, for examples); stress is addressed by the reaction of fight / flight. That is why all the shakes, diet plans and prepackaged meals do not create long-term effects are on a diet after. They do not address why the body is stressed. Rather, they try to act as anti-inflammatory rather than tack.

Are you interested in losing weight? Then you need to identify the dinosaur (s) and remove the pin. Once this happens, the body will use a state of ease, release weight and work out how we would like it, with long-term success
